It’s the time of year when trying to prevent condensation is at its most prevalent. Here in Cornwall, with our often fairly saturated maritime climate, many of you will be familiar with condensation on your windows, particularly in the winter months. Not only does condensation make your home damp and cold but it is often the cause of unsightly and potentially hazardous mould, read on for our advice on preventing condensation.

Condensation is created by excess moisture in the air and isn’t limited to just windows. It will occur on the coldest surface in the room. Microscopic droplets of water all around us become more concentrated when it the air is humid. Known as the dew point, when these molecules in high concentration come close enough to each other around a cold surface they coalesce into visible liquid i.e. condensation. Read on to find out how to reduce condensation in your home.

Understanding the cause is the key to preventing condensation. Anything that creates moisture will contribute to humidity, this can be anything from people breathing (0.2 litres/hr per person), drying laundry (5 litres per load) to a shower/bath (1.5 litre per shower or bath). Airflow is key to reducing moisture in the air (hence why bathrooms have extractor fans).

Warm, sealed up rooms with a moisture source will inevitably have condensation occurring.

Temperature

A great way to prevent condensation at home is by maintaining a steady lower temperature for a longer period of time. If possible, keep a low heat on all day, coupled with background ventilation, rather than bursts of higher temperatures in sealed rooms with a moisture source. To help with this, insulate areas that are susceptible to condensation; colder surfaces like windows, window reveals and external doors.

Ventilation

Ventilating can help you prevent condensation in your home by removing the moisture that’s in the air. Make sure to increase ventilation in the kitchen and bathroom when they are in use so that the steam from various heat sources like showers, kettles, or hobs doesn’t form condensation.

Air rooms

If possible, open up vents in windows to let fresh air in and moist air out, especially first thing in the morning after a night of warm air being trapped in your home. If you have trickle vents fitted on windows, open them up to allow a steady stream of ventilation without compromising on the temperature of your home.

Allow air space around furniture

Locate wardrobes, cupboards and other furniture against internal walls rather than external walls. If your furniture is against external walls, make sure to leave a gap of ~50mm behind furniture to allow space for the air to circulate in and around your furniture. This way there is space for the moist air to travel rather than forming on walls and creating damp mould.

Remove sources of moisture

Reduce the amount of water entering your home. If water has already entered your home make sure to wipe it away as soon as possible. This will prevent the condensation from settling and forming mould which will be more challenging to remove than water.

Dry washing

Dry your clothes outside if you can, but if this isn’t an option, think about drying them in the bathroom or kitchen. To prevent condensation, keep the extractor on with windows open and doors closed so the drying is contained in one room.

Tumble drying

If you have a tumble dryer, vent it to the outside. Removing excess heat and moisture allows the damp air to escape so it completely avoids potentially cold surfaces in your home on which to form damp mould.

Put lids on pans

Just like you would close doors to rooms like your kitchen and bathroom which tend to generate more moisture, close off the source of the steam too where possible. This includes doing things like putting lids over pans and making sure shower curtains are pulled to keep moisture contained. By doing this, less moisture is produced and spread around a room, decreasing the chances of it landing on cold surfaces and forming condensation.

Clean away mould

If you already have condensation that has formed mould in your home, this shouldn’t be too challenging to remove if you act fast and clean it off as soon as you see it forming. Use a mould cleaning product to eliminate the smell and make sure walls and surfaces are clean and dry after use. Black mould has been proven to have negative effects on health, so stopping this at the source is the best means of prevention.

Double glazed doors and windows

Double glazing not only helps keep the heat in but it also helps in preventing condensation. The reason we see so much condensation on a single glazed pane is because it is more susceptible to the cold which stimulates the dew point from the water vapour in the air. The gap between the two panes of a double glazed unit acts and an insulator and helps to keep the internal pane of glass closer to room temperature and it is this temperature difference that stops the water vapour from reaching the dew point and forming condensation on the glass. While this is effective, double glazing can’t eliminate condensation entirely, so following a combined approach of windows, ventilation and reduced moisture is the only way to completely get rid of it.

Note – without following the tips above to improve ventilation and reduce moisture, the improved thermal performance of modern double glazing may simply relocate the condensation issue elsewhere.

Ventilation Systems

Old properties were often draughty and poorly insulated. Over time, our homes have become more energy efficient, warmer and less draughty, but the trade off has been trapping warm humid air that leads to condensation and mould. Along with double glazing to better insulate your home, many modern buildings are having Positive Input Ventilation systems installed to extract humid air from indoors and draw in drier air from outdoors. A very cost effective equivalent of this is opening your windows to let fresh air in!

The Door Collection are a suite of doors made from premium grade aluminium. With two sightline options (either 49mm or 72mm) the Origin Door is available as a bifold, a traditional French door or as single door.

 The OB-49 is our slimline door system that has been optimised from our larger system. It is very robust and combines security with exceptional thermal performance.

The OB-72 is the system that started it all. Its genesis can be traced back to when a gap in the market was identified due to notable building projects struggling to find suitable doors. The result was a thoughtfully designed and carefully crafted sliding/folding door system that relies upon a free-gliding movement for operation.

Colour

With over 150 RAL (a universally recognised colour standard) shades to choose from, you’ll be hard pressed not to find one that compliments your interior. Origin’s extensive palette includes everything from bright primary colours via candy pastels to more earthy tones. Popular pigments include Anthracite Grey or Slate Grey, which whilst highlighting the vast panel sizes contrasts advantageously with the light wall of glass.

We selected our uPVC window supplier in part based on the fact that up to 75% of the plastic in their profile was recycled, making it one of the most environmentally friendly uPVC windows available. All of our timber products are FSC certified and glass and aluminium are both endlessly recyclable, so as far as our products go, we are very happy with their environmental credentials. While we can’t comment on the processes happening within the wider industry, at Philip Whear Windows & Conservatories we pride ourselves on our environmental credentials. 

Recycled uPVC

Our profile supplier has a unique process that means the uPVC can be recycled up to ten times so the lifespan of a door or window can actually reach 350 years. Materials are separated from old frames then the uPVC is broken down into fragments of uniform colour. After this, it is compressed into uPVC pellets which go on to make up to 75% of the new profile, giving the recycled material a new lease of life. Pretty much everything taken out of a house during the removal and installation process is separated and recycled, from glass and uPVC to aluminium and plastic. Even the masonry and rubble removed from a site goes on to be crushed down and reused as aggregate.

Energy efficient

To ensure our windows and doors are as energy efficient as possible, our products contain the highest energy-rated double-glazed units. As the majority of heat lost in a house is through windows and doors, this has the biggest impact on improving energy performance. Many of our customers have commented on how much warmer their homes are after upgrading their windows and doors, and this has a direct impact on their energy bills. Low ‘U’ value for high performance

Our top specification glass is high-efficiency and has an exceptional ‘U’ value of 1.2 W/m²K. The low ‘U’ value is an indication of high –performing double glazing that ultimately means less heat transfer through the glass and increased insulation. This energy efficient glass can be implemented in doors and conservatories but is a particularly efficient choice for your windows, keeping every room in the house protected from the winter chill.

Reflective coating to keep the heat in 

The interior of the glass is also energy efficient, utilising a Planitherm Total heat reflective coating. This coating bounces long –wave heat back into your room and further ensures heat retention alongside its low ‘U’ value. While the ‘U’ value keeps the cold out, this heat –reflective coating keeps the warmth in without you even needing to turn on your heater.

Cavity space to reduce heat loss

While these two energy efficient options already sound like everything you need to get your home winter ready, there are a host of other products that you can implement in your doors, windows and conservatory to ensure you’re prepared. Not only does our glass keep the cold out and the heat in, but in most of our installations, our sealed glass units have 20mm of cavity space to help keep your home warm. Anything less can increase the likelihood of heat transfer and, consequently, loss. 

Argon gas for thermal efficiency 

 As a way of minimising heat loss, the cavity space also contains argon gas as opposed to air. Because argon gas is denser than air, adding it to your windows and doors improves thermal insulation. Used in combination with a low emissivity coating, argon gas brings the temperature of your windows closer to that of your room, eliminating the air currents and drafts that occur when the chilly winter air meets the contrast of your warm (and energy efficient) home.

Warm edge spacer bars to eliminate drafts

Our energy efficient warm edge spacer bar around the perimeter of your windows, doors and conservatory glass also works to improve the U-value of your double –glazing. This will insulate the perimeter of the sealed glazing unit, the place where most of the heat is lost and condensation occurs which means no more damp window sills! These help to reduce conductive heat loss and increase your home’s energy efficiency while keeping it draft and chill-free. 

Toughened glass for added security

 In addition to the number of energy efficient products we offer, our products are also available in a range of patterns and obscurity levels. If toughened and laminated, they can easily keep your home warm, safe and stylish. Toughened glass is the least costly type of safety glass and with a high strength-to-weight ratio, when broken it will simply crumble rather than shatter.

Laminated glass for UV protection

If you would also prefer your glass laminated, this will add an extra safety element to your windows and doors. The laminate layer helps protect you from the small amounts of ultraviolet light that enters your house via windows, . This can which can leaded lead to faded upholstery and UV damage to wallpaper and , pictures / and artwork on the walls.
