Featuring masonry pillars between full-height window frames, and a lantern roof, an orangery is a more substantial structure that sits somewhere between a solid building and a conservatory. Originally designed to house citrus trees, orangeries originated from Mediterranean outhouses that most of us picture as being filled with lush orange trees from root to ceiling. Some are still used for this function, however, today they are more commonly used as a living space or extension to our homes.
A gable-end conservatory features a dual pitch or apex roof. The triangular shaped gable end creates additional height in this style of conservatory, which really creates a larger sense of space within the room. The design structure of a Gable End follows that of a traditional home, with a pitched roof and vertical sides, so it sits nicely as an extension to the home. This kind of design can add so much space to the interior, extending a kitchen/dining space out into the garden, with the addition of large glass panels that let in lots of light.
A self-explanatory name, a lean-to is built onto the side of a house, with a sloping roof that leans against a wall of the property. This particular design is popular, due to its simplicity, ease of installation and relative low cost when compared to more complex designs. It’s a little extra living space that doesn’t detract from the overall aesthetic of the home.
The design of a hipped roof is similar to a traditional house in that it has a pitched roof, but with the addition of one or more hipped sections. Thanks to its ability to withstand harsh weather conditions, this additional space can be made into a room that’s permanent, like a dining room, study room, or a reading room.
Much like a conservatory, except these are stand-alone structures. Instead of the more traditional glass roof, this solid roof design follows the aesthetic of the house, with a fully insulated solid roof. This style is becoming increasingly popular thanks to its ability to regulate temperature and provide a more solid room-like feel. Not only does this design look more holistic with the exterior of the property, it’s also a great way to extend a room, or create a new one entirely.
Whether in an orangery or a flat roof extension, a Lantern roof features a raised glazed roof with a central ridge, and a series of smaller glazed panels around the sides, creating a lantern-like effect. It’s also sometimes referred to as a ‘skylight’ or ‘roof lantern’.. The raised glazed roof of a lantern allows plenty of natural light into the room, creating a bright and airy atmosphere. The central ridge and smaller glazed panels around the sides also provide an unobstructed view of the sky and surrounding landscape.
